I’ll let you in on a secret…

When I first started working in a marketing agency, I hated it. I felt like I didn’t fit in and it wasn’t what I thought it would be.
Before joining a marketing agency, I had worked in many different companies, across many industries. I’d worked in not-for-profit, software, medical devices, retail, magazine publishing. But as soon as I joined the agency world, I was like a fish out of water.
Nothing made sense to me, the culture was different, problem solving was different and so was the approach to every day work.
A lot of people move from working in agencies into “clients” but it is less common for people to go the opposite way. To say I struggled was an understatement.
Everyone who I met at work, had spent their whole careers working in an agency and they had a certain way of doing things.  One that I wasn’t privy too. I felt like I needed to change what I did and how I did it to fit in. I came close to throwing in the towel and resigning.
Thankfully my boss talked me out of leaving and out of changing my style to fit in. She made me see there was value in my way of doing things and it was my individual experience that made me good at my job.
I have a lot a valuable experience in digital and marketing, learned through qualifications and also practical use. Some of my experience includes:
– Studying marketing at university, and then going on to do my masters degree in interactive multimedia.
– I have taken General Assembly, ADMA and various other marketing courses when I need to increase my skills in a particular specialisation.
– I have guest lectured at universities
But I have learned the most from doing. I’ve implemented marketing tactics and strategies in many organisations, and this is how I have gained most of my knowledge. From actually seeing what works and what doesn’t, always optimising and improving.
Another way I learn is speaking with others to see what they are working on and how they are tackling marketing problems. I go to as many conferences, or MeetUp groups that I can. In fact I am the organiser of a Marketing Technology MeetUp group. If you’re in Sydney feel free to come along to an event.
You see, I really like marketing, especially digital and customer marketing. I love being able to see results almost immediately, and to make changes if they need to improve.
Perhaps an overused word, but I am passionate about working with small businesses. Big companies are interesting and I love working on some of their marketing challenges. But I love the impact you can have when you create a campaign for a small business, and the difference it can make to the business’s bottom line.
Big agencies, or any agency for that matter, can be expensive and not practical for a small or medium sized businesses to engage with.
I plan to take the learnings and experiences I have from working with organisations – both big and small and blog about them.
I’ve been called honest and direct many times so I plan to take my no-nonsense, common-sense approach and make marketing simple for small businesses who may not be able to afford a marketing agency.
Marketing is not always simple and easy, and it can be expensive especially when you’re starting from nothing.  But my goal is to make marketing more affordable and achievable for small businesses. And while it may not be a quick fix, and it may involve some work to get it up and running, if you persist you will see results.
